Parents have asked us why their child's homework takes two, three, or even four times as long as their peers' and what they can do about it. This article describes the three major difficulties and what parents may do to address them. Students' main concerns frequently include:
1- Paying attention in class and while doing homework is a huge issue.
2- They frequently have one or more eyesight problems. Too often, these students' eyes are not working together, they are skipping words or lines when reading, or they are having difficulty copying from the board.
3- When doing homework, they grow anxious and frequently lose it.
When a kid struggles to pay attention in class, the content must frequently be re-taught at home. What's worse, the kids' homework time, which should have taken 45 minutes, is stretched to one and a half hours owing to re-teaching, and then to nearly two hours because they can't focus.
Vision problems have an impact on their homework in numerous ways:
1- They have difficulty correctly copying the notes off the board, and you spend time attempting to understand the task.
2- They skip words or lines when reading, making life even more difficult.
3- When doing math problems, they frequently do not line their work correctly, miss minus and division signs, and make careless errors.
When students are doing their schoolwork, they frequently become tense, and battles ensue. What frequently occurs is:
- Students are too afraid to raise questions in class, therefore they become stuck.
- The student or parent becomes enraged and then
- An disagreement begins, which frequently escalates into a battle royale.
What we suggest is that parents:
- Maintain silence while doing homework with your youngster.
- If your youngster becomes stressed, take a one or three minute pause.
- Hydrate them both before and during homework time.
- When reading, maintain an index card or their finger on the right line.
- If attention is a difficulty, try getting an ADHD diagnosis. If a student's learning disability or attention challenges have a major influence on their academic performance, they may be eligible for Individualized Education.
Plan ahead of time, and they may be able to obtain homework accommodations such as:
o Obtaining duplicates of notes provided by the teacher or another student
o Teacher seating to improve attentiveness
o Having the teacher double-check that the student wrote the work correctly.
o Having you sign off on the task and putting it somewhere they can find it.
o An early warning system in which the teacher notifies you to problems as they arise - Even if your child has 20/20 vision, see an optometrist if vision is a serious concern.
We have assisted thousands of parents and students in reducing homework time and stress.
